Families should learn ASL

I believe parents and all of the family members should learn ASL for a deaf child to promote access to communication and language acquisition. If that’s not in the picture, then how can the child learn by themselves or even communicate with others? I do not want to risk seeing any more deaf children suffer through like me or to have similar experiences that I had.

For example, my family left me out because I am deaf and rest of them are hearing. Even when I try to be part of the family by attempting to learn join a conversation, they kept telling me they would fill me in later or that the conversation wasn’t important enough.  I felt like I was being swept under the rug. The more abandoned I felt, the more lonely I became. For most of the time, I was alone in my room watching television or doing something else to keep me busy on my own.

My family does not care. They do not put any effort to learn about deaf culture, ASL or even about the oppression that deaf people face.  They choose to learn nothing about them. Because of that, I didn’t develop a bond with them. Every year for the holidays, when my family gets together, it is the worst time of the year for me. I never wanted to attend because I felt left out seeing everybody getting together having fun. It’s my strong belief that deaf children should be happy. I do not want to see any child suffer in a way that might lead to depression, especially if being with their family causes emotional havoc about whether the family loves the child or not. Love is just as critical for a deaf child as it is for hearing people. Family members sure have feelings. Animals do have feelings. A deaf child has feelings as well. Every person has feelings, end of discussion. If you learn ASL, the deaf child will be inspired because language is the access to love and knowing the child wouldn’t be alone anymore. Trust me, even small progress with learning the sign language will still have a tremendous impact. I strongly believe all parents should learn sign language for their deaf child to maintain the happiness and a sense of well being.  Just as a hearing child should thrive through hearing world, a deaf child should be able to navigate through the deaf world equally without any differences.
