For deaf interpreters, understanding and being able to talk about human anatomy in American Sign Language is a critical skill, particularly if you work with patients in a clinic or hospital. This workshop is designed for you to effectively build capacity in this arena.
Participants will practice sight translation – working from written information and images.  Then, participants will create an interpretation from a feed from a Certified Hearing Interpreter – and then do audience interpreting and/or shadow the work of a Certified Deaf Interpreter, Nigel Howard.
After viewing the sample videos, they will apply insight gained to re-creating their own video. Participants will be able to work as individuals or in small groups on their own timeline to complete activities.
Topics covered include:
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart Attacks/Myocardial Infarction
  • Aneurysms
  • Angioplasty/Angiograms
  • Atrial Fibrillation
  • Cardiovascular System

Facilitation through April 30

Jenny Smith-Hastings and Doug Bowen-Bailey will be facilitating the workshop through April 30 in the Ask CATIE support Forum – so work with colleagues, Jenny, and Doug to hone your skills talking about the anatomy in American Sign Language.

Certificate of Completion & CEUs

This course is being offered for CEUS through RID’s ACET program.  (For certified members in the CMP program, this is not an opportunity for you to earn CEUs as the focus of the Journey track is for novice interpreters working toward certification.)

RID CEUs are sponsored by the St. Catherine University, an approved RID sponsor for continuing education activities. This activity has been approved for 1.6 CEUs in professional studies and assumes some knowledge content.
