Competencies Addressed:  ASL semantics

Time Required for Activity: 10 mins

Objective:

To learn about ASL semantics of a particular ASL sign and consider how to interpret discussion of this sign into English.

In this short video, Jay Krieger asks whether a particular ASL sign is sexist. Specifically, he questions whether it is a sign that is or should be used by women.

Prediction

You will watch a video in which Jay Krieger discusses a particular ASL sign and questions whether it is a sign that should be used by women.

  • What is your prediction of what the sign is?
  • Why do you think the gender of the signer might be an issue related to a particular sign?

Watch the Video:  Watch the video and be sure you understand the sign Jay is talking about. Consider his question and whether you think it is a sign that women should and do use. Do you see native female signers using this sign? Do you use it?

In the video, Jay discussed the sign that depicts an individual “tipping their hat” as a sign of respect. Because of the history behind the sign as well as the general observation that women do not wear hats as often as men, Jay questioned whether it is appropriate for women to use the sign and if the sign is sexist.

Watch the Video Again:  Watch the video again and try to interpret it into English. Imagine you are interpreting the video for someone who is unfamiliar with American Sign Language. How might you interpret the sign? Might you describe what the sign looks like or how the sign is typically used? What factors might impact your decision about how to interpret Jay’s line of reasoning?
