2020 Application – GTC 6-Month Track

2020 GTC 6-Month Track Application

  • Welcome!

    Thank you for your interest in joining the Graduation to Certification (GTC) 6-Month track. Those selected to participate will take pre- and post-assessments in May 2020 and November/December, 2020, as well as the CASLI NIC or CDI performance exam (November/December 2020). The CATIE Center will support the costs of these assessments.

    We estimate that it might take you 1-2 hours to complete all of the requirements of the application. The statements below spell out the requirements of applying for GTC Assessment, and you need to agree to them before proceeding with the application.

    Eligibility Agreements

    The items below represent the eligibility requirements to be considered for GTC assessment. Please read them carefully so you do not spend time on the application to discover later that you are not eligible. If you do not meet the requirements, considering registering for the GTC Journey track.

    • If accepted, I will take the online pre-assessments and measures by May 31, 2020 and the post-assessments and measures and the CASLI performance exam by December 21, 2020. Please note: These assessments will include interpreting samples.
    • I understand that, if accepted, the CATIE Center will only pay the member rate for the CASLI Performance Exam. If I am not a member of RID at that time, I will be responsible to pay the difference.
    • I have passed the CASLI/RID knowledge exam. Proof of completion will be provided as part of the application materials.
    • I have completed, or will have completed, an interpreting program between May 2016 and June 2020 and will submit an unofficial transcript with my application.
    • I have completed or will have completed a bachelor’s degree by June 2020 or I have completed the alternative pathways for certification with CASLI/RID and will submit an unofficial transcript with my application..
    • I understand that this application and all supporting materials (essays and documentation) are due by April 16, 2020 at 5:00 pm CST.
    • I understand that the recommendation form is due by April 20, 2020 at 8:00 am CST.
    • I understand that my participation in GTC 6-month track requires the completion of all pre- and post-assessments. Failure to complete all required pre-assessments will result in my dismissal from the cohort.

    Be sure to keep the deadline of April 16, 2020 at 5:00 pm CST in mind. We must have all of your materials by April 16 including unofficial transcripts and other documentation. A recommendation must be received by April 18, 2020 at 8:00 am CST.

  • Written Test & Interpreting Credentials

    Membership in RID at the local, state or national level is not a requirement for the GTC program. However, you must have passed the RID/CASLI knowledge exam by December, 2019. In addition, the CATIE Center will only pay for the membership rate for the CDI/NIC Performance Exam. If you are not a member of RID, you will need to pay the difference.

  • In written English (300–500 words), describe how culture, race, ethnicity, and gender identity may influence interpreted communication. Include examples from your experience or observations.

  • The ASL Essay requires a video response. Please follow the instructions below for best results:

    1. Dress as you would for a professional interpreting assignment.
    2. Be sure that the background is solid and the lighting allows us to see you clearly.
    3. Upload videos to YouTube;
    4. Mark video “Unlisted;”
    5. Copy link and post below.
    6. Please leave your video available to us for the review process. We will let you know when you can take it down.

  • In ASL (2-3 minutes) describe the ways in which you have experienced diversity in learning ASL. If relevant, include any exposure to, or learning of, different dialects of ASL (For example, Southern, Midwestern, Black ASL, etc.). Describe the significance of these experiences for professional interpreters.

    One recommendation is required from a member of your local Deaf community.

    Select a reference who can address some or all of the following:

    • your ASL, English, and interpreting skills;
    • your adaptability, attitude, initiative, and confidence;
    • your demonstrated desire to become an interpreter;
    • your demonstrated respect for consumers;
    • your demonstrated competence working with consumers/colleagues who are different from you (e.g., culture, race, ethnicity);
    • your ability to make ethical decisions;
    • your meaningful connections to Deaf communities;
    • your interpreting program coursework/academic performance.

     

    You will provide the recommendation form link to your recommenders and inform them of the deadline (April 20, 2020 at 8:00 am CST):

    All forms submitted are confidential recommendations submitted directly to the Graduation to Certification Program.

    A confirmation email will be sent from the Graduation to Certification Program to the applicant when the recommendation is submitted, so that applicants can track the progress of the required submissions for their application.

    Deadline for References

    For your recommendations, the deadline is April 20, 2020 at 8:00 am CST. All other application materials are due April 16, 2020 at 5:00 pm CST.

    We wish we could accept each person who applies to the GTC 6-month track, but we know we will likely have more applications than spaces available. If you apply but are not accepted, you will still have access to all of the public resources made available by the CATIE Center to guide you in your ongoing development of your interpreting skills.

    We anticipate notifying all applicants by April 30, 2020.
